Mural de Heineken.

In celebration of Dominican Heritage Week, Heineken USA, the nation’s largest beer importer, will honor New York’s Dominican community at a ceremony today in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood by unveiling a 25-foot wide by 35-foot high mural replicating a painting by internationally acclaimed Dominican artist, Guillo Pérez.

Commissioned by Heineken USA, the mural depicts important Caribbean themes. A tropical, idyllic landscape replete with a Caribbean sky, vibrant foliage and Dominican workers in their homeland surround an image of a Heineken bottle.

Resoundingly traditional and folkloric, the mural celebrates the hard work and contributions of New York’s Dominican community. Pérez’s mural, at the intersection of Dyckman Street and Sherman Avenue in Washington Heights, will remain on view through December 31, 2001. A second Pérez mural will also be on view at the intersection of Broadway and Fairview.
Pérez, 75, has dedicated his life to creating an authentic, cultural iconography in memory of his homeland, the Dominican Republic. Over the years, Pérez has been the recipient of numerous awards, and has exhibited in prestigious museums and galleries throughout the Americas, Europe and the Middle East.

“Heineken is proud to exhibit the artwork of renowned Dominican artist, Guillo Pérez, right in heart of Washington Heights,” said Marimé Riancho, Heineken USA’s Brand Manager, Hispanic Market. “We hope that by placing Pérez’s art outdoors, it will fill the community with continued pride, drawing inspiration from their cultural heritage.”
