Albertsons Opens First Hispanic Format Store In San Diego.

Albertsons announced that the first Hispanic format, full-service ‘Super Saver’ store in the San Diego area will open on Wednesday, June 18. A pilot-program for Albertsons, the first three Super Saver stores were opened in August 2002 in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The opening of the San Ysidro Super Saver is the first expansion of this pilot program and the first Hispanic format Super Saver store for the Company to operate out of the Los Angeles area.

“Albertsons is thrilled to open this Super Saver store in San Ysidro. Our Super Saver stores better serve our Hispanic customer base by providing the right variety of authentic products and specialized services at competitive prices every day,” said Dave Simonson, Albertsons Southern California Division President. “Super Saver offers the best value package of quality and price.”

Striving to ensure that each Albertsons store is serving the unique needs of its community, the Company has been expanding its ethnic food variety over the past few years. Super Saver takes Albertsons’ commitment to neighborhood marketing to the next level through enhanced service and fresh departments and bi-lingual ads, in-store signage and associates. Best practices from Albertsons’ Super Saver stores can be found in Albertsons family of stores serving Hispanic communities throughout the country.

Further strengthening local community ties, Albertsons presented outdoor tables, chairs and umbrellas to Barrio-Station Youth Services, a leading local non-profit organization for disadvantaged youth. The patio furniture will allow children to eat at outside tables this summer rather than lunching indoors or having a picnic on the ground.

“We are thankful to Albertsons for helping us provide critical services to our youth. We welcome their support in our mission to keep school age kids off the streets by providing them with after-school and summer programs,” said Rachel Ortiz, Executive Director of Barrio-Station Youth Services.

While shoppers can expect the same friendly service as an Albertsons store, Super Saver will provide authentic merchandise and made-to-order products the neighborhood desires. Nopales, tomatillas, an enhanced variety of chiles, peppers and fruits are stacked in the produce department. The Carniceria is piled high with marinated meats including milenesa, carne asada and tripe. The Panaderia department has tres leches and bolillo rolls.

“We’ve got a great team in place — most of whom live right in the neighborhood,” explained Store Director Steve Cothren. “Super Saver is committed to serving this community both in our store and in the community.”

Until today the San Ysidro store was operated as a warehouse format store under the banner of ‘Max Foods.’ Today Albertsons removed the Max Foods sign and re-brand this store as a ‘Super Saver’ store. The first Super Saver circular ads also hit the street in the San Diego market. The store is 38,000 square feet and is open from 6 AM to 11 PM daily.
