McCann’s Robert Cohen Revises 2002 Outlook.

In the opening months of the year 2002, the U.S. economy expanded at a surprisingly strong 6.1% annual rate. Advertising spending also began to improve in the opening quarter of this year but at a much slower pace than the economy. The latest facts and indicators point to continued moderate expansion of advertising activities until September when the political contests heat up.

In the final months of this year the comparative gains will be much larger because of the sharp dropoff in ad spending a year ago following last fall’s terrorist attacks. Our forecast is now revised to a positive but modest growth of 2.1%. This compares with our forecast in December 2001 for modest growth in U.S. advertising of 2.4% in 2002.
