Moreno – Director Of Public Affairs @ The Gable Group.

The Gable Group announced the hiring of Jose Moreno as its director of public affairs. Moreno joins the firm with more than 20 years of bilingual experience in Hispanic and English public affairs and journalism, including cross-border public relations, community relations, Latin America outreach and government relations.

At The Gable Group, Moreno will spearhead bilingual campaigns and supervise accounts in the agency’s public affairs division, which includes the Metropolitan Transit Development Board’s Mission Valley East Trolley Extension, the Port of San Diego Ship Repair Association and WorkWell Systems. He will also lead the division’s community relations and new business efforts.

“The recent census data validates what we’ve been seeing with our client needs the past few years — a steady increase in the number of companies and public agencies that needed to expand their cultural relations, marketing and public affairs efforts to the Hispanic community,” said Tom Gable, chairman and CEO of The Gable Group. “Jose provides expertise in all three areas, plus broader public affairs and public relations experience to serve a range of client needs.”

Prior to joining The Gable Group, Moreno worked at Stoorza Communications, where he led several accounts, including Sistemeas Internacionales Medicos S.A., the first Mexico-based health maintenance organization to be licensed by the state of California, and Gateway to the Americas, a retail development mall at the Tijuana border. Before that, he worked in Paraguay and El Salvador for the United States Information Agency, where he helped strengthen open communications in emerging democracies by leading workshops and seminars for cabinet members and staff on communications policies.

In 1999, he served as deputy press secretary for California Governor Gray Davis, overseeing media relations activities for the departments of Industrial Relations, Personnel, Veterans Affairs and Agriculture. He arranged all interviews with domestic and international Hispanic media. Moreno was also responsible for managing communications with Latino constituencies and community groups in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Fresno and San Diego.

As public information officer for the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, Moreno created and implemented media and community outreach plans to Spanish language media in Central California. For the California Department of Transportation, Moreno managed media and crisis communications during the demolition of the Embarcadero in downtown San Francisco and the Nimitz Freeway demolition in Oakland following the Loma Prieta earthquake.

Moreno has also served as lead spokesperson for political campaigns, including Yes on Proposition 5 and No on Proposition 226. He began his communications career as news director for Radio Bilingue FM 91 and as producer and anchor for NBC affiliate KSBW-TV in Salinas, Calif.
