Outstanding Latinas To Be Recognized By el diario/La Prensa.

El Diario/La Prensa will host its eighth annual “Outstanding Latinas Luncheon” on Wednesday, March 19th. The event, which traditionally honors the achievements of 50 Latinas, will bring together past and present honorees, business and community leaders, media, and El Diario/ La Prensa’ staff members, to celebrate Women’s History Month. This year’s outstanding Latinas celebration is particularly important because the paper is celebrating its ninetieth anniversary, a historical achievement, precisely at a time when Hispanics have officially become the largest “minority” in the nation.

The event will feature a diverse group of distinguished Latinas including Jenny Alonzo, VP Productions & Operation, Marketing Division for Lifetime Entertainment Services; Diana Lam, Deputy Chancellor, Teaching and Learning, NYC Department of Education; Norma Morato, News Director, UNIVISION 41; Hon. Olga Mendez, NY State Senator; Hon. Margarita Lopez Torres, Judge of the Criminal Court of the City of New York; Linda de Jesus, President of The Bravo Group; and Betty Cortina, Editor in Chief of LATINA Magazine.

Rossana Rosado, Publisher and CEO of El Diario/ La Prensa will host the event, and Ida L Castro, Commissioner of the Department of Personnel of the State of New Jersey, and former EEOC Chair under President Clinton Administration will deliver the keynote address. Ms. Castro was the first Latina to hold this position in the US Government.

El Diario/ La Prensa will also welcome María Pérez-Brown, the creator and producer of Nickelodeon’s “Taína” and author of recently released -“Mamá: A Latina Tribute to her Mother”, and Alisa Valdés- Rodríguez, author of one of the most talked about books of the year- “The Dirty Girls Social Club”- which created “a bidding frenzy among publishers”, (The Chicago Tribune.) Maestro Hilton Ruiz, the internationally renowned Puerto Rican pianist and composer will perform at this homage to outstanding Latinas.

“As we at El Diario/La Prensa commemorate our 90th anniversary, this annual celebration is particularly important to me, as it highlights the extraordinary accomplishments of so many Latinas that have carried the torch of our pioneers, and continue to make history,” said Rossana Rosado, Publisher & CEO of El Diario/ La Prensa. “Our honorees represent the diversity that characterizes our Latino community in the Northeast, and make up an impressive mosaic of remarkable cultural and professional talent. I am very proud of all the powerful Latinas that have been honored by our paper throughout the years,” she added.

Past honorees include Marta Casals-Istomin, President of The Manhattan School of Music; Miriam Coletta, Promotions Director, UNIVISION 41; Esmeralda Santiago, Author of “When I was Puerto Rican”; Hon. Lilia Muñoz, Union City Municipal Court Judge; Johanna Guerra, New Producer at Channel 47; and Daphne Rubin-Vega, Actress in RENT. On Sunday, March 24 a commemorative supplement that includes biographical summaries and photos of the honorees will be included in a special edition of El Diario/ La Prensa.

The event will be held on Wednesday, March 19th, 12 Noon, at The Plaza Grand Ballroom, New York City. Sponsors include The New York Times, Lifetime Television for Women, Mary Kay, Nationwide Insurance, Partners in Health, Goya Foods, and American Airlines.
