Telemundo & FIU graduate first Hispanic Media Futures students.

Telemundo Media together with the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University announced the graduation of seven students from the inaugural class of Hispanic Media Futures, an innovative student development program to train future Hispanic journalists and communicators.

“We are extremely proud of each student that has participated and graduated from the program,” said Emilio Romano, president, Telemundo Media. “This collaborative initiative with FIU is completely aligned with Telemundo’s commitment to education, to grow the talent pool within the Spanish-language television industry and to nurture the next generation of Latino executives and decision makers.”

“Our collaboration with Telemundo is providing the resources to more accurately position our students for an outstanding career in Hispanic media and communications,” said Raul Reis, SJMC Dean. “We are excited for this inaugural class and for future classes who will be afforded this incredible opportunity thanks to the generosity and commitment of Telemundo. We are committed to paving new avenues for our students to learn and excel through such strategic partnerships and programs.”

The program is part of a multi-level, multi-year commitment by Telemundo to advance the inclusion of Hispanic professionals in the communications industry. The innovative initiative paired Telemundo executives with SJMC students in a special training and mentoring environment to foster growth and development of future communication leaders. The inaugural group of students began the intensive program at the start of the summer 2011 semester. In the first semester, the SJMC students received theoretical and practical learning through being immersed in the network and receiving mentoring from Telemundo executives in the areas of news, digital, research and communications. Following a thorough understanding of the various components and interrelated departments that comprise a national network, students were assigned to a department within Telemundo based on their area of study at SJMC.

This year’s graduates include Tiffanny Huertas (News), Lillie Carrero (Consumer Marketing), Laura Oduber (Communications), Nina Ocon (Digital Media), Diana Marti (News), Hilda Sarduy (News) and Maria Concha (News).

SJMC and the program are housed at the university’s Biscayne Bay Campus with the internship experience solely conducted at Telemundo.
