AAHP Calls Attention To America’s Uninsured On The Big Screen.

Armed with new data on the growing crisis of America’s uninsured and a mandate from the association’s Board of Directors to redirect public and political attention to strategies that can be used to address this important issue, the American Association of Health Plans (AAHP) launched an innovative ad campaign in movie theatres across the country.

“The uninsured crisis is one of the most urgent health care and social problems in our nation,” said Karen Ignagni, AAHP President and CEO. “But for too long, many politicians have preferred rhetoric over action. We are recommending specific proposals for change and encouraging the public to support real action on the uninsured.”

AAHP’s ad campaign informs moviegoers that by the time a two-hour film ends, an additional 465 Americans will lose their health insurance. The one- of-a-kind AAHP Cost Calculator, created by James Langenfeld and Richard Shin of the economic consulting firm LECG, humanizes the effects of rising health care costs and reveals this startling information.

“The AAHP Cost Calculator will inform the public and policymakers on the effects that countless mandates and frivolous lawsuits have on rising health care costs,” said Ms. Ignagni. “Rising costs are exacerbating the uninsured crisis. It is time to set partisanship aside and develop meaningful, long-term solutions for our health care problems. Our hope is that the AAHP Cost Calculator provides the impetus to do just that.”

The American Association of Health Plans (AAHP) is the largest national trade organization representing more than 1,000 health maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred provider organizations (PPOs), and other similar health plans that provide health care coverage to more than 170 million Americans.
