Top Spanish-Language Journalists Selected.

One hundred of the nation’s top Spanish-language journalists and news executives have been selected by a panel of judges who, during the past few weeks, reviewed hundreds of nominations sent by more than one thousand media outlets throughout the United States.

Among the honorees: Jorge Ramos, Emmy award-winning news anchor for one of the most widely-seen Spanish-language newscasts in the United States; Monica Lozano, president and COO of La Opinion, the largest and oldest Spanish-language newspaper in the nation; Luis Canela, a news anchor for Univision’s Channel 50 in Denver, who has won numerous awards for his reporting and community service; and Clara Reyes, the publisher of Dos Mundos, the only Spanish-language newspaper in its four state region.

“It has been an arduous, but very rewarding task,” said Dr. Mario Diament, associate professor at Florida International University, who is on the judging panel. “Some journalists are well-known. Others may not be known outside their cities, but have a undeniable impact on their communities,” he added. Other judges are: Dr. Nicolas Kanellos, director of the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project at the University of Houston, Dr. Oscar Somoza, professor of Spanish literature at the University of Denver, Jim Medina, managing editor, Hispanic Business Magazine, Beatrice E. Garcia, business columnist at the Miami Herald, and Helena Berdote, executive researcher, Hispanic Trends.

The honorees will receive their awards during the Hispanic Media 100 gala, to be held Thursday, August 23, 2001, at the Biscayne Bay Marriott in Miami. A portion of the proceeds from the gala will provide scholarships for the master’s program in Spanish-language journalism at Florida International University. A table reservation form is available on the HM 100 website.

“It took more than 200 years to organize a national event to honor and celebrate the past, present and future of Spanish-language media in the United States,” said Chris Day, CEO of TJFR Group. “With the widespread support from the media and corporate America, the event looks to truly showcase the best of Spanish-language journalism in the United States. Those who aren’t involved will be missing an excellent opportunity to support this segment of the Hispanic community.”

The judges will also select the inaugural members of the Hispanic Media Ring of Honor, an award recognizing the life and work of Spanish-language pioneers who paved the way for today’s Hispanic journalists. The Ring of Honor honorees will be announced at a later date.
