New York Retains First Place As The City Most People Would Like To Live In.

For the fourth year in five, New York City is the most popular city in, or near to which, the most people would like to live if they did not live where they live now. The Big Apple also held the number one position last year, in 1999, and in 1997, and came second to San Francisco in 1998.

San Diego, in fifth position last year, and San Francisco, in sixth place last year, both moved up this year to equal second place behind New York. Seattle, in third place last year is this year’s number four. Denver and Las
Vegas are tied for fifth.

These are the results of The Harris Poll conducted annually by Harris Interactive on most popular cities. It is based on a nationwide survey of 1,022 adults surveyed by telephone between July 20-25, 2001.

No other cities moved up the top 15 list significantly, although Boston improved slightly, from number nine last year to tied for seventh.

The biggest change was Atlanta’s drop from #2 last year to #9 now. This is the first time Atlanta has fallen below #5.

Overall, this top fifteen list is remarkably stable. All of last year’s top 15 cities are in this year’s list which includes 16 cities because four cities are tied for 13th place (Charlotte, Portland, Houston, and Miami). This time next year, New York City will have a new mayor. Rudolph Giuliani has good reason to feel proud that the Big Apple has been #1 for all but one of his last five years in office.
