Nielsen: 55 Metered Markets Reach 68.96% of U.S. TV Households.

The number of TV households in the 55 local Metered Markets is now estimated to cover 68.96% of all U.S. TV households, according to Nielsen Media Research. Beginning September 21, 2002, the universe estimate in the 55 Metered Markets is 73.5 million television homes. Each rating point from the 55 Metered Market total represents one percent of the 73.5 million universe, or approximately 735,000 TV homes.

These figures, which are projected to January 1, 2003, will be used for the entire 2002-2003 television season. The new universe estimates complete the incorporation of data from the 2000 Census. Nielsen Media Research annually reports universe estimates based on information from a variety of sources, including Market Statistics, a division of Claritas, Inc; the United States Census Bureau; and Nielsen Media Research’s samples.
