Perenchio Resigns As De La Hoya Promoter.

Because of substantially increased commitments at Univision Communications Inc. arising from the imminent launch of Univision’s new broadcast network, Telefutura, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Jerry Perenchio, has advised Oscar De La Hoya that he can no longer serve as his fight promoter.

Perenchio stated “It’s been a wonderful experience promoting Oscar’s fights this year with Arturo Gatti in March and the WBC World Super Middleweight Championship fight with Javier Castillejo in June. Oscar’s a world champion and as one of the premier marquee fighters in the world, he can now call his own shots. I hate stepping back now, just when he will be having some of the biggest fights of his career, but I am happy that we’re leaving him in the capable hands of Richard Schaefer, who runs Oscar’s companies and is a top-notch businessman.”

De La Hoya said, “I can’t thank Jerry and Howard Rose enough for all they did for me and Golden Boy Enterprises this year. I’m sorry to see them go, but I certainly understand that Jerry’s first commitment is to Univision and with the launch of their new network Telefutura in January, he really has his hands full.”

Perenchio continued, “I’ll always be Oscar’s good friend and one of his best fans, and remember, he’s still under contract to Univision as one of our top spokesman so we’ll continue to be involved in his career for many years to come.”
