Gems Television (GEMS) announced that Nielsen Media Research will begin measuring the Spanish language cable network effective March 1st 2001. Gems becomes the fourth national Spanish language network to be measured by Nielsen Media Research's Nielsen Hispanic Services. The first quarterly Gems report will be for the 2nd Quarter 2001 measurement period, and will be delivered to all current NHTI subscribers in July.
The Gems cable network joins the Telemundo and Univision broadcast networks and the Galavision cable network as the fourth nationally measured Spanish network programmed to meet the viewing needs of the fast growing U.S. Hispanic market. According to the latest information available from the 2000 U.S. Census, persons of Hispanic descent or origin is the fastest-growing ethnic group in the U.S. and will soon be the largest.
Nielsen's NHTI service is the first and only national service fully dedicated to monitoring the viewing habits of the diverse Hispanic community in the U.S. This service enables customers to use Spanish language television more effectively and to evaluate it with a research methodology that has the same quality as other national television sources. The NHTI sample consists of a panel of 800 Hispanic TV households equipped with Nielsen people meters. The sample is designed to represent the entire Hispanic population in its proper proportion for language spoken in the home, geography, and Hispanic penetration.
