Beginning August 19th through September 30th, 2008, Dominican Republic-based foodservice company MercaSID and its brand, Aceite Cristol, will unveil Proyecto “MUJER Dominicana en Nueva York” (The Dominican Women‚s Project in New York), a major photo exhibition highlighting the lives and achievements of Dominican women across the Diaspora.
The exhibit˜ the first of its kind-- consists of 125 beautiful and breathtaking, poster-size photographs, biographical profiles, audio interviews and videos, highlighting the individual lives, struggles, and views of Dominican women. MUJER Dominicana en Nueva York will be on display for a limited run in New York City at CUNY’s Washington Heights Campus, the Amsterdam Plaza adjacent to the North Academic Building on Amsterdam Avenue, between West 138th and West 136th Streets.
The highly acclaimed exposition is the work of photographer, Nicole Sánchez in collaboration with Giovanna Bonnelly. The project was first launched in March 2007 in the Dominican Republic as a part of the “Walks of Life” project, sponsored by MercaSID’s “Women‚s Day” celebration. The exhibit will travel to New York City and intends to bridge women‚s struggles between those who remained on the island and also those who migrated, abroad˜ particularly to the United States, where the largest population resides outside of D.R.
“MercaSID is very proud of this project and is excited to share this photo exhibition with such a respected institution as CUNY and the dedicated members of The Dominican Studies Institute,” states José Miguel Bonetti Guerra, MercaSID‚s president. “The original exhibit was a huge success in the Dominican Republic and included only 100 profiles. We have added 25 more women from Dominican communities throughout the U.S. because we believe that in order to understand who Dominicans truly are, you have to examine the lives of those from the island, as well as the enormous population that now lives abroad.”
The Amsterdam Plaza at The City College campus is an open space between the North Academic Center building and Amsterdam Avenue itself, also overlooking City College‚s main esplanade on Convent Avenue and West 138th Street.
“This stunning and provocative photo display not only celebrates the strength, fortitude and beauty of women in general, but also recognizes the strong cultural ties that bind Dominicans abroad and Dominicans in the country of origin,” states Dr. Ramona Hernández, Director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute.
“Our hope for MUJER Dominicana en Nueva York is to bring new visibility to the hundreds and thousands of Dominican women who, sometimes silently and often away from the limelight, have been trail-blazers in their country, a society undergoing enormous transformations within the last four decades-- A society where women are leading the way now more than ever,” states Mujer’s Marketing Director José Llano.
