Sep-26-2008

For the first time in history, a Spanish-language TV station is poised to win the audience race from 6 pm to midnight, a time period which straddles early fringe, access, primetime, and late fringe, on a weekday basis during a September ratings survey.

At the end of the Nielsen Station Index (NSI) Local People Meter (LPM) September survey (August 28 through September 24, 2008), Spanish-language WXTV-Univision 41, the New York area’s premier Spanish-language TV station, leads all other New York TV stations – regardless of language – in the sought after 18 to 49 year old audience group.  WXTV is seen by 165,000 persons aged 18 to 49 on an average quarter hour (AQH) basis weekdays from 6 pm to midnight.  That’s up 54 percent from viewership for the September 2007 survey. WABC-TV Channel 7 places second with 139,000 AQH viewers from 6 pm to midnight weekdays.  It is the best September survey performance ever in this crucial time period by a Spanish-language TV station in New York.  The previous record was fifth place, held by WXTV in the September surveys of 2005, 2006, and 2007.

Here are the highlights:

6 pm local news:  WXTV leads New York’s 6 pm weekday news race with 107,000 AQH viewers for “Noticias Univision 41” (Univision 41 News) with Rafael Pineda.  WABC-TV is second with 90,000 aged 18 to 49.
6:30 pm network news:  “Noticero Univision” (Univision Network News) with Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas leads New York’s 6:30 pm weekday news race with 109,000 aged 18 to 49 viewers vs. 97,000 for second place “ABC World News” with Charles Gibson.

Access:  For the first September survey ever, WXTV leads New York’s primetime access (7 pm to 8 pm) race with 144,000 viewers aged 18 to 49 for its novela, “Querida Enemiga” (Dear Enemy), up +122 percent from its eighth place finish in the September 2007 survey.  WPIX is second with “Two and A Half Men” and “Family Guy” (118,000) while the once almighty “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune” on WABC are third with 101,000.

Primetime:  In New York’s primetime (8 pm to 11 pm) race WXTV leads with 199,000 viewers, its first ever September survey win.  That’s up +57% from its fourth place finish a year ago.  Second place WNBC Channel 4 with 173,000 viewers aged 18 to 49 on an AQH basis.

11 pm local news:  WXTV scores its best ever showing in the New York area’s 11 pm news race for September ever with 157,000 viewers aged 18 to 49 for second place, within spitting distance of WABC-TV which has 158,000.

Late network news:  WXTV wins the late night (11:30 pm to midnight) news race as well as the time period race hands down among viewers aged 18 to 49 with 120,000 for “Noticiero Univision Ultima Hora” (Univision Late News), a network news program with anchor Enrique Gratas.  That’s up +82% from its sixth place time period finish a year ago, and miles ahead of WABC-TV’s “Nightline,” which attracts 83,000 viewers aged 18 to 49.
