Jorge Hidalgo named SVP of Operations at Hemisphere Media Group

Hemisphere Media Group, Inc. announced that Jorge Hidalgo joins the company as senior vice president of operations.

In this newly formed role, Hidalgo will be responsible for Hemisphere’s technical operations, with a focus on its Latin American businesses, serving as liaison to Canal 1, one of only three national broadcast television networks in Colombia, which is jointly owned by Hemisphere.

“Jorge brings decades of experience in Hispanic news, sports and entertainment, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to the Hemisphere team,” said Alan J. Sokol, President & CEO of Hemisphere. “I’m confident his tenure at Telemundo and Univision will allow us to optimize our operations and transform Canal 1 into the leading broadcast network in Colombia.”

Hidalgo is a seasoned television executive with 38 years of experience in the U.S. Hispanic television industry. He most recently served as a consultant to Hemisphere in its bid to secure the broadcast license to Canal 1, where he played an integral part in planning and overseeing the development of network’s technical operations center in Bogota.

Prior to consulting for Hemisphere, Hidalgo was the executive vice president of sports at Telemundo Network, where he spearheaded the effort to secure three FIFA World Cup soccer Spanish-language broadcast rights. During his 18-year tenure at Telemundo, Hidalgo also served as senior executive vice president of the network’s news division, where he was responsible for creating the largest foreign network news presence in Mexico City, as well as establishing bureaus in major U.S. Hispanic DMAs, among them Washington DC, New York, and LA. He was also responsible for increasing Telemundo’s ratings to their highest levels in over a decade.

Before joining Telemundo, Hidalgo served as sports director for Univision Network, where he secured rights to the World Cup and oversaw the production of the 1994 and 1998 World Cups.

Hidalgo has twice been named among the “101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports” by Sports Illustrated magazine and one of the “Most Powerful Hispanics in Sports” by Hispanic Business and Poder magazines. Throughout his career, Hidalgo has been awarded three regional Emmy awards and five national Emmy awards and been co-recipient of an Edward R. Murrow award, among many other prestigious industry awards and designations. In 2015 Hidalgo was inducted into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport during his distinguished career.

“I am delighted to join Hemisphere’s strong leadership team and to use the expertise I’ve gained in my executive, technical and production roles at Univision and Telemundo to take Canal 1 to new heights, and to prepare the company as it continues to expand globally.”
