New Spanish-language TV Categories announced for National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Awards

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced three new categories in each of its national competitions to recognize excellence in Spanish-language television programs.

“The growth of Spanish-language media over the last 50 years has been very closely followed by our organization,” said Malachy Wienges, Chairman, NATAS.  “American television is changing at a rapid pace driven by the growth of multicultural audiences who often speak more than one language.  The Spanish-language media continues to grow exponentially each year and NATAS believes it is long-overdue that we recognize its excellence in our industry.  I would like to thank our National Awards Committee Co-Chair, Linda Giannecchini and committee member, Chiqui Cartagena, Vice President of Marketing, Univision Communications, Inc. for developing the task force that created and fostered these new categories into our core programs of Daytime, Sports and News & Documentary Emmy® Awards.”

Unlike other media sectors that are shrinking, the Spanish-language media space  continues to grow every year and already boasts 6 broadcast networks and over 100  cable channels in 2013. Spanish-language media is also unique in another very important way in that it is the only ethnic-targeted media in a language other than English that has a national footprint.

“The Spanish-language community will welcome this acknowledgment with open arms, “said Giannecchini.  “With our 19 regional chapters seeing more than 800 Spanish-language entries in 2013 alone, the time is upon us to bring this powerful media community the true recognition that the National Emmy® Awards confers.”

“We drew together very passionate members from throughout the Spanish-language community of media companies and talent agencies to come up with recommendations to reflect what we call the new American reality,” added Cartagena.

Members of the NATAS Spanish-Language Taskforce that worked on this venture are:

o    Gabriel Abaroa – CEO, Latin Grammy
