Procter & Gamble Continue Partnership With LULAC Scholarship Fund.

Continued growth in the number of young Hispanics entering college has created a challenge for organizations like LULAC National Educational Service Centers (LNESC), who provide financial as well as counseling support to youth through a variety of programs. One of the agency’s programs, the LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF), awards scholarships to students across the country by securing corporate matching funds for local communities participating in the program. Last year, LNESC was proud to announce that it created a partnership with the Procter & Gamble Corporation to support Hispanic youth. For the second consecutive year, Procter & Gamble donated $50,000 to the LULAC National Scholarship Fund, which will be distributed in scholarship awards to Hispanic students throughout the United States.

The LULAC National Scholarship Fund receives 700 new information requests each week from talented Hispanic students who are struggling to meet the rising costs of a college education. Last year more than $660,000 in scholarships were awarded to students from more than 73 communities – but more financial resources are needed. This year the generosity of Procter & Gamble will provide LNESC with the resources to match scholarships for more than 100 students chosen by their communities to receive awards. Students receiving the scholarship are selected on the basis of their academic achievement and community service. The majority of scholarship winners supported by Procter & Gamble are from Texas, California, Illinois and the Northeastern corridor of the U.S.

Students receiving the scholarships have demonstrated good academic performance and an interest in business. This financial support provides a great psychological boost to young people who are thrilled to learn that a major corporation like Procter & Gamble has invested in their development. Carlos Zapata, LNESC Scholarship Coordinator, says “The partnership between LNESC and Procter & Gamble will have long term effects for these students. We hope that it will continue for many years to come.”

Procter & Gamble’s investment in the scholarship fund is linked to the Company’s Avanzando con Tu Familia program. The goal of Avanzando is to provide the Hispanic community with information and tips for family development in a changing, challenging world. Avanzando also provides a community outreach program designed to nurture the relationship between
Procter & Gamble and Hispanic families. Maria Molina, Manager External Relations, Procter & Gamble, said: “We continue to embrace the opportunity to support LNESC’s scholarship program. This initiative is very much in line with the goal of Avanzando con tu Familia to help Latino families succeed.”
