AARP Launches Publication For 50 Plus Hispanic Community.

The American Association of Retired People (AARP) is introducing Segunda Juventud – a quarterly, bilingual newspaper created specifically for Hispanics age 50 and over.

Translated as Second Youth, Segunda Juventud will be provided initially to 200,000 Hispanic AARP members in Houston, New York City, L.A., Miami and Puerto Rico. In addition, copies will be distributed throughout AARP’s 53 state offices and at major Hispanic sponsored events. The circulation is slated to more than double during 2002 as the Association expands its outreach to older Hispanics across the country.

The 35 million-member organization has worked extensively with leading Hispanic organizations, jointly conducting important research projects, sponsoring key community events and providing programs benefiting Hispanic community members.

“We recognize that the United States is in the midst of a demographic revolution and that all organizations must broaden their appeal to Hispanic Americans,” said AARP Board Member Charles Mendoza. “Segunda Juventud will play a major role by providing news and information of particular interest to this community.”

Segunda Juventud is being produced and distributed by AARP Publications, which also publishes Modern Maturity and My Generation magazines and the AARP Bulletin. For Segunda Juventud, AARP editors worked with editors and writers of La Opiníon – the Los Angeles-based Spanish-language newspaper and one of the largest Spanish-language publishing companies in the U.S. The premier issue of Segunda Juventud includes profiles of Hispanic community volunteers, an update on changing immigration laws, a health update on promising diabetes treatments and a piece about popular singer-song writer Juan Gabriel.

“Segunda Juventud is dedicated to providing timely and accurate information on vital topics for this 50+ community,” said AARP Publishing Director Martha Ramsey. “The publication will also keep readers up to date on important social issues and lifestyle trends and introduce them to fascinating people who are living and loving their Second Youth.”

Segunda Juventud is part of AARP’s Hispanic Initiative – an effort to reach out to growing numbers of Hispanics age 50 and over. According to the U.S. Bureau of Census, there are currently about five million Hispanics over age 50 in the U.S. and that number is expected to nearly triple over the next 25 years to 14.2 million.

AARP recently launched a series of television and radio ads designed to inform and increase awareness of AARP within the Hispanic community. Future AARP offerings will include products, services and information for Hispanics as well as bilingual advocacy and educational materials.
