Billboard Salutes Latin Music Artists On Telemundo Network.

Hot Latin stars, sizzling music and celebrity presenters highlighted the Billboard Latin Music Awards Show at Miami Beach’s Jackie Gleason Theater of Performing Arts in Miami Beach, Florida. The Telemundo Network televised the event in the U.S. as a 3-hour special on April 29th, in addition to being broadcast in the Dominican Republic, Peru, Mexico (Televisa), Venezuela, Argentina, Guatemala, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Nicaragua, and throughout other Latin American countries on MGM Latin America, at a later date.

The only show of its kind, the Billboard Latin Music Awards is the annual premier star-studded event, honoring the year’s biggest and brightest stars. This year’s show headlined performances by Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, Thalia, Son By Four, Alejandro Fernandez, Ricardo Montaner, Alejandro Sanz, Lupillo Rivera, Banda El Recodo, Luis Fonsi, Paulina Rubio, Gilberto Santa Rosa, MDO, Grupo Limite, Melina Leon and OV7.

Finalists for the awards ceremony are chosen based on their performances on Hot Latin Tracks and The Billboard Latin 50 charts, which comprise airplay and sales. The measuring period for the nominee selection is January 30, 2000 to January 29, 2001.

Four special awards were also presented at this year’s event. Chicano rock band Los Lobos was honored with a Billboard Lifetime Achievement Award for an outstanding career. Regional Mexican icons Los Tigres Del Norte received the Spirit of Hope Award for their extraordinary contributions to music and music education through their Los Tigres Del Norte Foundation, and legendary percussionist Mongo Santamaria received the Hall of Fame Award for outstanding longtime artistic merit. Latin music pop sensation and novela diva Thalia was also honored with the distinctive Billboard “Premio de la Estrella” award in recognition of her exceptional contributions to the world of Latin music.

In conjunction with the Award Show, BMG US LATIN has released the 2001 “Billboard Latin Music Awards” compilation album, the third of it kinds for Latin music. It showcases many of the top Latin artists nominated from the 2000 calendar year on the Billboard Latin Charts, including top songs from Christina Aguilera, Christian Castro, Marc Anthony, and Rocio Durcal, among others, and is currently available nationwide.
