Terra.Com Presents First Latin Rock Competition.

Terra Lycos will launch an amateur Latin rock competition in Los Angeles, beginning Tuesday, Oct. 16. The contest promises 30 days of pure rock, and proceeds go towards funding tuition and educational needs of Latin youths affected by the Sept. 11 attacks in New York.

After a review of charitable organizations, Terra.com has decided to contribute 100% of the Terra Rock concert proceeds to the Hispanic Federation, a New York-based, non-profit organization, with 70 member agencies, providing a variety of social services to Hispanics. The funds raised will help defray the costs of tuition, books and after school programs for Hispanic youths whose families were affected by the recent tragedy.

Twelve bands will compete in the Terra Rock “Battle of the Bands” contest, with concert-goers eligible to vote on-line for their favorite group. Voting begins after the first concert Tuesday, Oct. 16 and continues through Friday, Nov. 16. Additionally, Terra.com will donate $1.00 to the Hispanic Federation for each eligible vote on the Terra Rock site.

According to Dennis Seda, director of marketing at Terra.com, “Latin rock in any of its many forms is a preferred genre among music lovers today. Never before has Latin rock been so popular and so close to becoming a classic genre in the music world. Now, Terra.com not only presents these existing groups but also creates a perfect venue for Latin youths to contribute to the relief efforts for their peers in New York.”

Terra.com will also auction off musicians’ guitars, jackets, drum sticks and other memorabilia, with full proceeds going towards the Hispanic Federation’s Sept. 11 education fund.

The competition begins Oct. 16 at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles with East LA Sabor Factory and Slowrider performing and special guest bands Pastilla and Circo. The “Battle of the Bands” continues until the grand finale on Sunday, Nov. 11, at The Palace in Hollywood, where Amigos Invisibles, David Summers and Hombres G, will be present to support the winning band.

Other bands participating in the competition include Enjambre, Rascuache, Chencha Berrinches, Almalafa, Curanderos, Viernes 13, 15 Letras, and Calavera, while acclaimed groups Los Aterciopelados, Los Pericos and Cielo Ceniza, will be performing guest bands during the Terra Rock concerts.

The winning band will receive $5,000. However, they won’t be the only winners in this musical competition. Music enthusiasts who listen to streaming music from the Terra Rock competition Oct. 16 through Nov. 16 will be eligible to win prizes, including Hewlett Packard PDA’s (portable digital assistants). Fans who attend the concerts in Los Angeles can win PDA’s, the latest model digital entertainment centers, and an all expenses paid trip for two and tickets to a concert performance by one of the competing bands in the “Battle of the Bands” amateur Latin rock contest.
