Cuba’s National Children’s Theater La Colmenita’ To Perform In The US.

Cuba’s internationally acclaimed Children’s Theatre, La Colmenita (the little beehive) will tour California from March 7th through the 21st in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, San Diego, San Francisco and the State Capital Sacramento. La Colmenita, Cuba’s National Children’s Theatre will present bilingual renditions of Shakespeare and classic Caribbean folktales with a lively mix of music and dance. La Colmenita is an accomplished theatrical troupe of 25 children that includes several disabled cast members.

Performing at various venues on the West Coast, La Colmenita will give a special afternoon performance Sunday, March 16th at L.A.’s premiere Latin entertainment venue The Conga Room and will be honored in a special presentation by the State Legislature at the State Capital building on Monday, March 17th. The tour marks the first time in almost half a century that a Cuban youth group has performed in the United States.

Global Exchange is sponsoring La Colmenita Children’s Theater as part of its work to normalize relations between the United States and Cuba through direct people-to-people contact. In California, the troupe will participate in workshops with local youth at schools and cultural centers. Prior to the U.S. tour, La Colmenita counted among its many adoring fans such noted public figures as Mohammed Ali, Patch Adams, Harry Belafonte and Senator Dede Alpert, who saw the children perform in Cuba.

Proceeds of La Colmenita 5-city tour were originally earmarked for pediatric medical aid for Cuban children, but when the cast heard about California’s budget cuts, they requested that half of the money be donated to a statewide children’s organization.
