Martin Baron Of The Miami Herald Named Editor Of The Boston Globe.

The Boston Globe announced that Martin Baron, executive editor of The Miami Herald, has been named editor of the Globe, following the news that Matthew V. Storin, Globe editor since March 1993, will retire at the end of July.

Under his leadership, the newspaper won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage. In addition, Baron was named “Editor of the Year” by Editor & Publisher Magazine, a leading trade publication for the newspaper industry, in April of this year. His appointment as Globe editor becomes effective July 30.

“We are delighted to welcome Marty Baron as editor of the Globe,” said Globe Publisher Richard H. Gilman in announcing the appointment. “When Matt last year told me of his desire to retire, my top priority was to attract the best editor to the job. I believe we have done that. The breadth of Marty’s experience, the confidence and soundness of his news judgment, and his fresh perspective will all ensure that the Globe remains an outstanding newspaper.

“We are fortunate that Marty will inherit the Globe’s award-winning team of editors, reporters and photographers,” continued Gilman. “I can’t say enough about their efforts or about the guidance provided by two of our top editors, Helen Donovan and Greg Moore. I am sure that all will continue to flourish under Marty’s leadership.”

“Being selected for this position is a great honor,” said Baron. “The Globe is extraordinarily rich with talented journalists, and their commitment to excellence has made this one of America’s finest newspapers. I look forward to joining the staff very soon.

Baron began his journalism career at The Miami Herald in 1976, serving as a state reporter and later as a business writer. He then moved to the Los Angeles Times in 1979, where he became business editor in 1983, assistant managing editor for “column one,” polls and special projects in 1991, and editor of the newspaper’s Orange County Edition in 1993.

In 1996, he moved to The New York Times, and in 1997 became associate managing editor responsible for the nighttime news operations of the newspaper. He left the Times in 1999 to assume his post as executive editor of the Herald.
