Aguacate – 54 Million During Cinco de Mayo.

The California Avocado Commission projects Cinco de Mayo will mark the largest consumption day of the year for avocados with consumers feasting on a record 27 million pounds or 54 million avocados, mostly in the form of guacamole.

“Avocado consumption is at a record high and Cinco de Mayo is the biggest day of the year for us,” said Michelle Spelman, Communications Director for the Commission. “Our growers plan for the holiday every year and harvest to insure there are plenty of avocados available for those festivities.”

While guacamole is the most popular method of preparing avocados, other traditional dishes include California Avocado Tortilla Soup – a savory tomato broth topped with California avocados. Additional guacamole recipes and numerous Mexican dishes are featured on the California Avocado Commission Web site at http://www.avocado.org so revelers can add an authentic flair to their own Cinco de Mayo parties.
