AL JAZEERA TAKES OVER MEGA’S AIRSPACE
July 12, 2011
You will not see the Esta Noche Tu Night Show or the likes of Cuban show host Alexis Valdés, but instead you will get the news form the Arab world on the controversial Qatar-based Al Jazeera TV Network.
That is if you are watching New York’s Channel 92 where mogul Raúl Alarcón’s Mega TV had been broadcasting until a few days ago.
Due to cable negotiations, sources explain, between Mega TV and cable broadcasters, Al Jazeera has taken over Mega’s air space until new word. The independent Arab broadcaster, owned by Qatar Media Corporation and headquartered in Doha, Qatar, was initially launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel.
Al Jazeera has since expanded into a global network accessible in several world regions and recently with newly established subsidiary headquarters in US territory. While originally perceived as “too pro-Arab”, the network has since shown its willingness to broadcast dissenting views thus upsetting Arab dictators. More recently, Al Jazeera has been acclaimed for its in-depth coverage of the “Arab Spring” of revolutions which continues to this date.
Meanwhile, the Raúl Alarcón-led group of radio and television stations, Spanish Broadcasting System, owners of Mega TV, found its way back on the NASDAQ board after a hiatus.
