Telemundo announced that Susan Solano Vila has been promoted to Executive Vice President, Marketing for Telemundo Communications Group. Solano Vila will report to Jacqueline Hernández, Chief Operating Officer.
In her new role as EVP of Marketing, Solano Vila will be responsible for the full scope of marketing activities across the Telemundo network and mun2, overseeing strategy that will drive consumer awareness, audience engagement and ratings, as well as work closely with the Telemundo senior management team. In addition, she will serve as a key liaison to all marketing divisions of NBC Universal.
A 19-year veteran of Telemundo, Solano Vila has been a key player in the growth and evolution of the Telemundo and mun2 brands. Most recently, Solano Vila successfully spear-headed the network’s “one brand, one voice” marketing approach across the organization, while championing the current brand positions for both Telemundo and mun2.
In her previous role as Senior Vice President of Marketing, Solano Vila was responsible for the overall strategic and creative vision for Telemundo marketing, as well as overseeing all the expressions of the network brand including integrated and consumer marketing, advertising, and digital marketing for the network, stations and its cable channel mun2 with a total 360 degree approach. She launched the popular Club de Noveleras, in-market tours and was responsible for developing a business model for Telemundo’s recently launched Licensing and Merchandising division. Additionally, she has paved the way for Telemundo’s extensive implementation of emerging media vehicles and experiential marketing to strengthen and leverage assets for consumers, clients and partners. Solano Vila and her team received two EMMA Awards for Excellence in Multicultural Marketing from NAMIC, 2007 and 2009.
Solano Vila joined Telemundo in 1991 as Media Manager where she was responsible for establishing an in-house advertising department. She began her career as a media planner for Campbell Ewald and later served as account supervisor for Nestle and Eastern Airlines in the Caribbean and Latin American markets and Coca-Cola Foods and GM/Chevrolet in the US Hispanic markets.
In addition, the network announced that Joanna Popper has been promoted to Vice President, Marketing, Telemundo. In this role, Popper will oversee off-air marketing, digital marketing strategy, Licensing and Merchandising and East Coast marketing initiatives. Her focus will be on driving ratings and revenue opportunities through marketing. She will report to Solano Vila.
Popper joined Telemundo’s marketing team in January 2007 and has been instrumental in developing Telemundo’s digital marketing strategy, as well as successfully maximizing the network’s off-air investment. In the past year, she helped develop Telemundo’s entry into Licensing and Merchandising with product lines in jewelry, furnishings and calling card products.
Prior to joining Telemundo, Popper worked in marketing at DHL and strategy consulting and investment banking for McKinsey & Company in Miami and J.P. Morgan Chase in New York and Sao Paulo, Brazil.
“Telemundo’s brand is at the core of everything we do. Connecting with our audience and differentiating our brands has been key to our success,” said Hernández. “Susan’s leadership and passion for the brand have driven tremendous results and have led to the development of great creative talent across her team. I am excited to see what Susan, Joanna and the Telemundo marketing team will do next.”
