Puerto Rican Demographic Transitions. [REPORT]

The growth of the Puerto Rican population has taken place in almost every state and every region of the United States. The Puerto Rican population in this country grew from 3.4 million to 4.6 million between 2000 and 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Overall, the Puerto Rican population makes up 9.2 percent of the total Hispanic population, and 1.5 percent of the country’s population.

Centro for Puerto Rican Studies has released a new research brief “Demographic Transitions” by researchers Patricia Silver and Carlos Vargas-Ramos which takes a closer look at where Puerto Ricans are settled and where they are migrating.

While the majority of Puerto Ricans are still concentrated in the Northeast, the South continues to increase its concentration. New York is still the state with most Puerto Ricans with more than one million while Florida is closely behind with nearly 850,000.
