Corporate Social Media Planning

Digital Brand Expressions (DBE) announced the availability of a new research report on how companies are adopting the use of social media throughout their organizations. This study, conducted by DBE, looked at if companies are using social media, how they are approaching its incorporation into business communications, if they have a strategic social media plan in place, and which business units are involved in the planning, measurement, and use of social media.

Some interesting highlights from the report include:

* While 78% of respondents indicated that their business is actively using social media, only 41% reported that these activities are covered under a company plan.

* Of companies with a social media plan in place, 94% include marketing activities within the plan, but only 16% include Human Resources or recruiting activities

* Of those companies that don’t have a strategic plan but think it is important to create one, the number one activity rated as important to include in a social media plan is allocating resources for ongoing activities

“The research results pretty closely mirror what we’ve been hearing when we’re talking with clients and potential clients about their social media programs,” says Veronica Fielding, president of DBE, “The lack of corporate oversight and planning around social media activities across business units is what drove us to create our Enterprise Social Media Adoption program which officially launched earlier this year. It’s the first service of its kind, pulling together an enterprise-wide social media program using a processed approach to ensure brand protection, competitive advantage and measurable results.”

“The majority of respondents – whether their company has a strategic plan in place or not – agreed on the importance of setting up metrics and tracking methods to measure the ROI of social media activities,” adds Marc Engelsman, VP of Client Programs & Services, “The recent SEMPO State of Search study showed the top three social media metrics most important to marketers as brand awareness, customer engagement and site traffic. Clearly these are all measurable and attainable with strategic planning.”
