State of Minorities in the Recession.
August 24, 2009
Representatives from the Center for American Progress Action Fund and leading organizations advocating on behalf of communities of color testified before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on the experiences and unique challenges communities of color continue to face in this difficult economy.
Following the testimony Dr. Christian E. Weller, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress (CAP), Eric Rodriguez, Vice President of the Office of Research, Advocacy and Legislation at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), Cy Richardson, Vice President of Housing and Community Development at the National Urban League (NUL), and Romana Lee Akiyama, Deputy Director for the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (National CAPACD), held a lively and engaging discussion on the state of communities of color in this economy.
CAP also released a report, “Leveling the Playing Field: How to Ensure Minorities Share Equitably in the Economic Recovery and Beyond” by Senior Fellow Christian E. Weller and Research Associate Amanda Logan that describes how apparent structural problems such as labor market segmentation, credit market steering, and discrimination in the U.S. economy and in the labor market have caused Hispanics and African Americans to lose more economic ground than their white counterparts during the recession.
