May 11, 2007
Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) announced that its television subsidiary, Mega TV, Channel 22 (WSBS-TV), was named the “Best Television Station in Miami” by the Miami New Times magazine in its annual “Best Of” issue of May 31st, 2007. Mega TV was first launched in March of 2006 and has developed into an eclectic mix of Hispanic talk shows, political analysis, sitcoms, as well as celebrity specials, music featurettes and cultural documentaries.
The popular South Florida publication praised Mega TV in its stated mission to provide quality programming at a local level that effectively reaches a predominantly Cuban market, but also appeals to the general Miami population as well. Mega TV’s programming has gained a substantial voice within the community with shows such as:
· ”Raíces y Recuerdos” (“Roots and Remembrances”), which explores Cuban history and culture.
· “Pronósticos” (“Forecasts”), hosted by Carlos Alberto Montaner, takes a provocative look at the political future of Latin America.
· “Polos Opuestos” (“Poles Apart”), hosted by the venerable María Elvira Salazar, invites Latino leaders such as Senator Mel Martinez and Carlos Franqui to debate political topics such as the resurgence of the political left in Latin America.
· “Handyman”, a comedy home-makeover show.
· “Habana Abierta: Boomerang”, a gripping and timely documentary on the Cuban musical group.
· “Hermanos y Detectives”, a comedy about sibling detectives.
· “La Tremenda Corte”, popular rerun of the 1950’s court sitcom.
“It is a tremendous source of pride for SBS to have MEGA TV chosen as the best TV station in Miami by The Miami New Times,” said Cynthia Hudson-Fernández, Chief Creative Officer and Executive Vice President for Spanish Broadcasting System. “It is a distinction that encourages us as a company to continue pushing for television that stands alone in quality and excellence for the Latin American community of South Florida.”
