mun2 to air ‘Spanglish: Mi Vida Remixed’.

mun2 will air an original news special entitled “Spanglish: Mi Vida Remixed,” on April 21st at 10PM. The special, which explores the cultural phenomenon of “Spanglish” as defined by today’s Latino youth, airs on the heels of a recent Peabody Award win for the network’s previous news special entitled “For My Country? Latinos in the Military.”

The upcoming special half-hour telecast takes a look at the subject of “Spanglish” and how new generations of Latino youth are pushing the sound barrier with their own unique form of language, culture, style and influence. From the spoken word community in the Bronx, to Calle Ocho in Miami, to the Hollywood scene in Los Angeles, mun2 explores how Spanglish has emerged and how it defines young Latinos publicly and serves as a badge for the duality which they live. Collectively, teens and celebrities speak about the way language defines them across generations, regions and cultures.

“Spanglish culture is an essential part of our viewer’s lives. This special takes a look at this evolving cultural phenomenon and form of expression among youth in a fresh and authentic way,” said Alex Pels, general manager, mun2. “This is a fun, pop culture piece that focuses on today’s youth who are in-tune with their Latin roots and heritage, while at the same time living the American experience.”

Shot in New York, Miami, Los Angeles and the Texas border, the piece profiles various members of the Latin community in a colorful way including Nuyorican singer and spoken word artist, La Bruja; Dominican-American slam poet Oveous Maximus; a 21-year-old college student and top-ranked baseball player; and a 16-year old Mexican-American pageant queen launching a new line of Quinceañera dresses. In addition, the news special features interviews with Latino artists and celebrities who have propelled Spanglish into mainstream pop culture including Cuban-American rapper Pitbull, self-proclaimed “Godfather of Latin Rap” Mellow Man Ace, bilingual rockers Los Abandoned and south central hip-hop duo Akwid.

Additional commentary from Spanglish culture watchdogs like “Ask A Mexican” columnist Gustavo Arellano and “Living in Spanglish” author Ed Morales, help shed light on topics including the media’s influence on youth and their use of language, the emergence of Spanglish throughout the United States, and language as it expresses the scope and diversity of what it means to be Latino in the U.S. today.

“Spanglish: Mi Vida Remixed” is the third installment in a series of news specials created by mun2 as part of the network’s commitment to produce content specifically geared for young Latinos which focuses on the relevant issues that affect them. mun2’s previous news special, “For My Country? Latinos in the Military,” was last week awarded with a prestigious Peabody award for distinction and achievement in electronic media in 2006.
