López Negrete receives Lifetime Achievement Award from Association of Hispanic Media Professionals.

Alex López Negrete, co-founder of the nation’s second largest independently owned and operated Hispanic advertising firm, Lopez Negrete Communications, will receive the Lifetime Achievement award from the Houston Association of Hispanic Media Professionals (HAHMP) at the organization’s 21st annual HAHMP Sylvan Rodriguez Scholarship Gala. The event will be held March 30 at the InterContinental Hotel in Houston.

“Our executive board of directors gathers and discusses Hispanics in the communications field that have made considerable contributions to the community and serve as positive role models for Hispanic youth,” said HAHMP President Vicente Arenas. “This year, it was very appropriate to nominate Mr. López Negrete.”

The Houston Association of Hispanic Media Professionals was created as a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization to provide support for Hispanics involved in the gathering and dissemination of news, to encourage and support the study and practice of journalism and communications by Hispanics, and to promote a fair and accurate portrayal of Hispanics in the media.

“Today’s mix of radio listeners, newspaper and magazine readers and television viewers is very different than it has ever been. The growth of the Hispanic population has seen to that. HAHMP does important work in shaping tomorrow’s journalists and media professionals so that the reporting and programming are relevant, powerful and seen from a different perspective,” said López Negrete. “It is imperative that the industry mirror its ever-changing consumer and HAHMP does an excellent job of staying current with those constant transformations.”

In addition to presenting López Negrete with the Lifetime Achievement honor, HAHMP will award scholarships to 10 deserving students majoring in journalism or communications during the gala. The students are selected based on submitted applications and must attend a community college and/or university in the United States or Puerto Rico.

Lopez Negrete Communications donated $2,500.00 towards the HAHMP scholarship fund. “It is individuals and corporations that allow HAHMP to award scholarships to Houston area students. Without these generous donations, such as Lopez Negrete’s, we would not be able to provide aspiring students the assistance to get into an industry in which Hispanics are severely underrepresented,” added Arenas.
