8th Ad Age Hispanic Creative awards.

Grupo Gallegos won Best of Show at Advertising Age’s 8th annual Hispanic Creative Advertising Awards show last night in Miami for an Energizer TV commercial called “Beard.” The most-awarded campaign of the night was “No Seas Normal” (“Don’t Be Normal”) by La Comunidad, which picked up the only Gold award for the Multimedia category as well as Gold and Silver awards for Radio and TV.

The biggest winner was Conill. The agency won prizes for four different clients: Procter & Gamble Co. for Tide in both the Magazine and TV categories; Toyota Motor Sales USA for 4Runner and Tundra TV spots, T-Mobile in TV and Radio; and two spots for Latinbeat Film Festival.

This year’s competition drew a record 717 entries. The awards, presented in cooperation with the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies (AHAA), celebrate the best creative work in the U.S. Hispanic market and Puerto Rico. Work was awarded in the following categories: Television, Radio, Magazine, Newspaper, Out-of-Home, Multimedia, Nontraditional/guerrilla marketing, Interactive, and Direct Marketing.

“The record-setting number of entrants is reflective of the growth of Hispanic advertising,” said Carl Kravetz, chairman of AHAA and chairman/chief strategic officer of cruz/kravetz:IDEAS. “Creative competitions build interest in our industry and help attract creative talent that will challenge us to continue to raise the bar. The new Latino cultural identity adds a new dimension to the creative process and it’s exciting to imagine the direction our brilliant creative minds will use to connect with consumers using this new model.”

The awards were judged by top Hispanic agency creative directors and senior marketers. This year’s jury president was Raul Cardos, president and general director, DDB Mexico. The other creatives on the jury were Pablo Buffagni, VP/Creative Director, Conill; Mauricio Galvan, managing partner/exec creative director, The Vidal Partnership; and Jaime Rosado, VP regional creative director, Puerto Rico & Caribbean, JWT PR.

The client judges were Sonia Green, director-Florida Initiative, General Motors Corp.; Rick Marroquin, director of marketing-U.S. Hispanic, McDonald’s Corp.; Regina O’Brien, senior director-national advertising and marketing communications, Comcast; and Georg Rasinski, director brand management, Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages.

“It’s exciting to see the creative work get better and better,” said Laurel Wentz, Advertising Age’s international & multicultural editor. “The Hispanic market is winning more prizes at international awards shows, too. What I think is special about the awards we do with AHAA is that the judges know the Hispanic market well so they recognize and award the cultural insights and nuances that make the work resonate with Hispanic consumers.”

The awards show, following AHAA’s fall conference, was organized by Miami agency del Rivero Messianu DDB at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts and co-hosted by actress Nadine Velazquez from the hit television show My Name Is Earl, and actor/comedian Paul Bouche. The awards gala had the same theme as the conference – Latino Character.
