Wal-Mart announces support for the Smithsonian Latino Center.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. announced its unprecedented support for the Smithsonian Latino Center, a division of the Smithsonian Institution dedicated to promoting Hispanic culture, heritage and achievement. Wal-Mart is an underwriter of ¡Smithsonian con Sabor!, the Center’s first gala that will help raise funds for its initiatives, which include exhibitions, research, public programs and educational opportunities.

“This new partnership, and other upcoming alliances which Wal-Mart will announce throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, shows that we recognize and celebrate the impact that Hispanics are having in America,” said Wal-Mart’s Chief Diversity Officer Charlyn Jarrells Porter. “Wal-Mart is proud to support the Smithsonian Latino Center and to celebrate and appreciate Latino culture throughout the year.

“Wal-Mart’s $75,000 donation is part of its continued commitment to support the Hispanic community and its issues of importance through sponsorships, scholarships and service. Wal-Mart embraces diversity and has a long tradition of supporting all cultures in all facets of its business,” said Porter.

“We at the Smithsonian Latino Center are delighted that Wal-Mart is supporting our inaugural benefit gala, ¡Smithsonian con Sabor!,” said Pilar O’Leary, Executive Director of the Smithsonian Latino Center. “Funds raised through the gala will be used to support the Center’s work at the Smithsonian Institution and its affiliated organizations across the United States. Preserving, celebrating and advancing Latino contributions at America’s most venerable cultural institution are of great significance to our community and we feel fortunate to have Wal-Mart as a partner in this important effort.”
