Univision makes clean sweep of NYC Sunday demos.

A Spanish-language TV station has swept all key demographic audience categories in New York’s TV ratings race regardless of language, despite the facts that the New York TV market is barely 20 percent Hispanic and that four commercial TV stations (the affiliates of Univision, TeleFutura, TV Azteca, and Telemundo) compete for that 20 percent vs. the six major commercial stations that compete for the 80 percent, non-Hispanic portion of the New York TV audience. In addition, the 6 pm local news and 6:30 pm network news were by far New York’s most watched early news programs on Sunday, August 13 (yesterday). And Univision 41 also won New York’s prime-time ratings race (8 pm to 11 pm) among viewers aged 18 to 34 and 18 to 49.

Univision 41 (WXTV) won all three major demographic audience categories on Sunday, August 13. Univision, which broadcasts first-run programming in prime time year-round, while major English-language networks show reruns, attracted more viewers aged 18 to 34, 18 to 49, and 25 to 54 than any other New York TV station on a total-day (sign-on to sign-off), average quarter hour basis yesterday.

Univision 41 attracted 49,000 viewers aged 18 to 34 yesterday on an average quarter hour basis for the entire broadcast day, 6 am to 2 am, according to Nielsen Station Index (NSI) Local People Meter (LPM) ratings. That’s a 1.1/6 NSI rating/share. Tribune’s WPIX Channel 11 placed second with 43,000 viewers aged 18 to 34 (1.0/5 NSI rtg./shr.).

Among those aged 18 to 49, Univision 41 attracted 92,000 viewers on a sign-on to sign-off basis (a 1.0/5 NSI rtg./shr.). Again, WPIX/11 placed second with 77,000 (0.8/4).

Among those aged 25 to 54 Univision 41 led with 84,000 viewers (1.0/5) vs. 79,000 (0.9/4) for second place WABC-TV Channel 7.

In New York’s early evening local news race “Noticias Univision 41” with anchor Merijoel Duran won all key demographic categories by a mile. “Noticias Univision 41” from 6 pm to 6:30 pm attracted 107,000 viewers aged 18 to 34 (2.4/12), 171,000 viewers aged 18 to 49 (1.9/9), and 164,000 viewers aged 25 to 54 (1.9/8). It may not have hurt that Dominican-born Duran was featured in New York’s Dominican Independence Day parade on the same day. Local news on Fox’s WNYW Channel 5 placed second among the two younger age groups while local news on WNBC Channel 4 was second among those aged 25 to 54.

Univision’s network news, “Noticiero Univision” also won its time period (6:30 pm to 7 pm) yesterday going away with 95,000 viewers aged 18 to 34 (2.1/9 NSI rtg./shr.), 141,000 viewers aged 18 to 49 (1.5/7), and 141,000 viewers aged 25 to 54 (1.6/7). ABC World News on WABC-TV Channel 7 placed second in each instance.

In New York’s prime time ratings race (8 pm to 11 pm) Univision again won going away among younger viewers. Univision 41 got 90,000 viewers aged 18 to 34 (2.0/7) and 193,000 viewers aged 18 to 49 (2.1/7). In both instances WABC-TV Channel 7 placed second.
