Univision receives Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Network News Series.

Univision Communications Inc. announced that the Univision Network has been honored for its excellence in journalism with the prestigious 2006 Edward R. Murrow Award. The first and only Spanish-language network to ever receive this national award, the Univision Network has now been honored a total of six times by the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA). This year, “Primer Impacto,” Univision’s highly rated newsmagazine, was recognized in the category of Outstanding News Series for the fourth time.

The program was honored for its three-part series entitled “Angeles en el infierno” (Angels in Hell). The series aired in October and November of last year and presented shocking first-hand accounts of the exploitation of children in three Latin American countries. An investigative team from “Primer Impacto” traveled to El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Mexico to uncover the disturbing child labor practices that exist there, apparently with little impunity from the local governments involved.
“The plight of children working in sweatshops in Asia has been well documented throughout the years, but the story of child labor in our own hemisphere is less well known,” said Maria Lopez-Alvarez, Vice President and Co-Director of Univision Network News. “Receiving one of the most prestigious awards in electronic journalism for exposing this important story is extremely satisfying.”
