One-third of households Broadband – enabled.

Roughly one-third of US households now subscribe to some type of broadband service, reports In-Sta. As broadband becomes commonplace, Internet use is evolving with broader adoption of a variety of applications. For example, nearly half of respondents to a recent In-Stat Consumer Broadband Survey telecommute, with the incidence even higher among the sought after high-income households. This is an ideal audience for telcos to offer an enhanced home office communications package to.

In-Stat also found some significant differences in the ways various ethnicities use broadband. For example, African American respondents have the highest adoption of gaming. Interestingly, there was a large variance in the incidence of Web camera usage. Respondents who identified themselves as being of Asian ethnicity had the largest incidence of usage.

Recent research by the high-tech market research firm found the following:

Over half, 57 percent, of In-Stat survey respondents play games over the Internet.

Of all Internet applications, online shopping will have the largest increase in use over the next year.

Younger respondents tend to have the heaviest application adoption, particularly those aged 18 to 24, in their adoption of gaming, video downloads, and personal Instant Messaging (IM).

IM for entertainment purposes is lower among the highest income level; however, IM usage for both entertainment and business purposes is higher among those with higher incomes.

Leading Edge and Early Buyers have a higher incidence of anticipated increased gaming compared to all other segments. This suggests that gaming will continue to be used more among early cycle buyers than late cycle buyers.
