The sale of Televicentro in Puerto Rico could interest SBS.

Miami based Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) has been interested in getting a foot hold in the television industry in the US Hispanic market and have been very interested in expanding their presence in Puerto Rico beyond their radio holdings.

This year they launched Mega TV in Miami.

The intended sale of Televicentro WAPA-TV. MTV de Puerto Rico and WAPA America offers interesting opportunities for SBS.

Televicentro WAPA-TV offers the opportunity to create a Radio & TV combination for the company on the island, to compete more aggressively with the same complement offered by Univision Communications with their TV & Radio combination in Puerto Rico.

The MTV de Puerto Rico cable channel offers some synergies with the Mega TV format they launched in Miami in March of this year.

Interestingly, the WAPA America national platform offers very unique opportunities for MEGA TV to have a home for their TV format across multiple market targeting the US Hispanic consumer.

In recent weeks and months, SBS has been divesting itself from non-core assets, along with their corporate building in Miami.

This sale is not cheap. The rewards offer opportunities for SBS in a market where the cost of entry both into Puerto Rico and for a national platform to reach US Hispanics is sometimes cost prohibitive and the availability of media entities to purchase to attain the coverage and range are limited.
