What Would a Million Dollar Mother’s Day Look Like?
April 9, 2006
From the U.S. to Brazil and Chile to the Dominican Republic, mothers in countries and territories around the world will be honored by their loved ones this May 14. But phone calls and flower arrangements aren’t the only things people send on Mother’s Day.
In light of the upcoming special occasion and the Western Union(R) Million Dollar Giveaway, the company commissioned a survey asking 1,000 adults age 18 or over what they’d do for Mom if they won $1 million. The most popular gift among Hispanic respondents? A vacation, with nearly 38 percent saying they’d treat Mom to a trip with their new-found wealth. In addition, 12 percent of all adults surveyed responded that they’d give Mom cold, hard cash and let her spend it however she wants. It’s with this spirit of giving that Mother’s Day remains one of Western Union’s busiest transaction days.
The survey also showed that, if they won $1million, people tend to want to give Mom things that they likely want for themselves at their specific stage in their own lives. Those 18-24 years old and eager to get their own set of wheels are most likely to buy Mom a car. And 25-44 year olds starting their lives and families would get her a new house. Those 45-64 years old would send Mom flowers if they won $1million, and respondents over the age of 65 think time is the best gift – opting to visit Mom on her special day.
Other things people said they’d do for Mom if they won $1 million include paying off her bills or her mortgage, treating her to a shopping spree, decking her out in jewels or treating her to a spa trip. The survey also reveals that males are more likely than females to say they would take their mother out for a meal (9 percent vs. 3 percent).
And not only would Moms reap the benefits of their children’s $1million winnings, they’d also be among the first to hear about it, with 18 percent of the respondents – especially adults age 18-34 – saying they’d call their mother before notifying anyone else.
