KMEX-TV was among the non-fiction winners of the 65th Annual Peabody Awards announced by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The prize was awarded for the station’s unprecedented series, “El 15% de los Estados Unidos” (15% of the United States).
“We set out to create a public service investigative series that examined the past, present and future of the Hispanic community in the United States, revealing diversity and contributions far beyond the usual television depictions,” said Jorge Delgado, President and General Manager for Univision Los Angeles. “This project took 18 months to produce and we are proud to say that it has become one of the most successful properties for KMEX-TV.”
The 19-part series was hosted by news anchors Rolando Nichols and Claudia Botero, and reporter Oswaldo Borraez. It was inspired by the book “La Nueva California, Latinos in the Golden State” written by Dr. David Hayes Bautista, Ph.D., Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the University of California, Los Angeles.
