The History Channel en espanol honored the legacy of Mexican-American hero and activist Cesar Chavez with the
two-hour film THE FIGHT IN THE FIELDS: CESAR CHAVEZ AND THE FARMWORKERS’ STRUGGLE on Chavez’s birthday, Friday, March 31.
“Cesar Chavez is an unprecedented leader in the lives of Hispanic-Americans,” said Marlene Braga, Director of Programming and Production for The History Channel en espanol. “This film is a vivid recollection of his leadership and use of non-violent tactics to effect social change and achieve equality for farm workers and Mexican-Americans. We are pleased to bring this timely documentary to the Latino community.”
THE FIGHT IN THE FIELDS: CESAR CHAVEZ AND THE FARMWORKERS’ STRUGGLE, produced, directed and written by Rick Tejada-Flores and Ray Telles, covers the full arc of Cesar Chavez’s life.
A social history using archival footage, newsreel, and interviews with Ethel Kennedy, former California Governor Jerry Brown, Dolores Huerta, and Chavez’s brother, sister, son and daughter, among others, the documentary traces the remarkable contributions of Chavez and others involved in this epic struggle for safer working conditions, equality, and better pay for farm workers.
The compelling two-hour documentary, which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, garnered numerous awards including a CINE Golden Eagle, a Gold Apple from the National Educational Media Network, an ALMA award from National Council of La Raza, and was also named Best Documentary at the San Antonio CineFestival.
In addition to the premiere of THE FIGHT IN THE FIELDS (LA LUCHA EN EL CAMPO), Latino viewers of The History Channel en espanol can expect to see outstanding Spanish language programs such as the signature series Modern Marvels, Biography and Deadmen’s Secrets; fascinating true stories of the world’s great leaders and celebrities including noted Latinos; specials such as Russia: Land of the Tsars; topics that spotlight Latin American history such as Machu Picchu, the Inca and the Maya, and the soccer series Campeones del Mundo.
