Univision 41 In NYC Emmy Race.

Univision 41 (WXTV), earned two thirds of the Emmy Nominations awarded to Spanish-language broadcasters in the 49th annual New York Area Emmy Award Nominations, which were announced by the New York TV Academy (NY Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences).

The six Emmy nominations to Univision 41 include one in the category, “Outstanding Multi-Party Hard News Story,” which went to reporter Merijoel Duran for “De Papa a Mama,” a story about the high rate of death in childbirth among Hispanic women in the US. Two “Noticias Univision 41” reporters were among the three nominees in the category, “Outstanding Multi-Part News Feature.” Weekend anchor Olga Alavarez was nominated for “Milagro Para Una Madre” (Miracle for a Mother), and Berenice Gartner got a nomination for “Sonorie Colombia: Un Ano Despues” (Colombia Smiles: One Year Later), a story about the work of US plastic surgeons who volunteer to work among rural poor children in Colombia. Gartner’s reporting on this story from Colombia earned her an Emmy Nomination last year and won an Edward R. Murrow Award.

“Noticias Univision 41” weekday evening anchor Denisse Oller’s “Juan Luis: Entre la Paz y La Guerra” was nominated as “Outstanding Entertainment Programming” (series). “Noticias Univision 41 al Despertar” (early morning news) Antonio Martinez got two nominations: one for “Belleza Plastica,” a story about plastic surgery in the “Outstanding Health/Science Programming (series) category, and the second for “Mi Heroe” (My Hero) in the category “Outstanding Historical/Cultural Programming (segments).

The 49th annual New York Area Emmy Awards honor excellence in television achievement for programs seen between September 1, 2004 and August 31, 2005 in New York State and northern New Jersey. The Emmy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 12, 2006 at New York’s Marriott Marquis.
