Gustavo Santaolalla Wins Golden Globe Best Original Song for Brokeback Mountain.

Music composer, songwriter and producer Gustavo Santaolalla won a Golden Globe award last night for “Best Original Song: Motion Picture” for Brokeback Mountain’s “A Love That Will Never Grow Old” (performed by Emmylou Harris and co-written by legendary lyricist Bernie Taupin). The award marks the year’s latest honor for Santaolalla, who, in addition to receiving a second Golden Globe nomination for “Best Original Score” (Brokeback Mountain), also won the “Producer of the Year” LATIN GRAMMY and was named by TIME Magazine as “One of the 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America”

Santaolalla’s music career started at the age of 16, when he wrote, recorded and produced his first single in his native Argentina. He founded the band Arco Iris in 1967 and made history as the pioneer in the fusion of rock and Latin American Folk. He relocated to Los Angeles in the late 70’s. Teaming with production partner Anibal Kerpel, the Santaolalla-Kerpel team would achieve super-producer status. The duo is responsible for shaping Café Tacuba’s reputation as one of the most original rock bands in the international world of alternative music. His success continued with the launch of his highly successful record label, Surco, where he has produced records for Juanes, Molotov, Bajofondo Tango Club and other premiere Latin acts. This work has resulted in numerous LATIN GRAMMY awards and nominations for Santaolalla.

Santaolalla continues to push the envelope, fulfilling one of his lifelong dreams, film scoring. He scored Amores Perros, one of the most-acclaimed Mexican films since Bunuel’s Los Olividados. He also composed the original score for 21 Grams and North Country. In addition, Santaolalla received the Flanders Film Festival Best Original Score Award in Belguim last year for his work on 21 Grams and the BAFTA award in February 2005 for his original score of Motorcycle Diaries. Recently, Santaolalla was nominated for Critic’s Choice Awards for Best Composer and best song for “A Love That Will Never Grow Old.” He is currently scoring director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s new project, Babel, starring Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt.
