The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Top Employers For Latinos.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Inc. (SHPE) released final results of a survey to determine the top companies for Latinos in the technology industry. Among the findings of the more than 1,500 members polled, the survey showed that IBM was selected by a majority of members as their preferred employer based on the company’s opportunities for upward mobility, benefits and salary.

“Since its inception, SHPE members have worked hard to expose Hispanics to technology and encourage them to choose careers in this industry by providing scholarships and professional development,” said Diana Gomez, president of SHPE. “This survey will help us learn more about what Hispanics look for in this field while also highlighting those companies that our members feel provide the best resources to them.”

SHPE conducted the survey to learn more about its members’ needs and wants when selecting a company for employment. Members were asked eight questions regarding companies on the SHPE Industrial Partner Council (IPC) and other sponsoring companies, which provide additional support and in-kind services to the organization. More than 40 companies make up the IPC and include IBM, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble and Verizon. Recruitment tools, public image, upward mobility and growing opportunities for Latinos were among the topics in the survey. Detailed results will appear in the August-September issue of SHPE Magazine.

Other survey findings:

— The top three companies selected as the best-known for providing growing opportunities and upward mobility to Latinos were IBM, Johnson & Johnson and Lockheed Martin.

— According to members, the top three companies that offered great benefits and high paying salaries were Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grummond and Microsoft Corporation.

— 62% percent of members said the employment offer was the most important concern when looking for employment.

“SHPE members found that IBM is a leading employer of Hispanics because we play a leading role in the industry when it comes to Hispanic community outreach and Hispanic corporate leadership,” said Adalio Sanchez, General Manager, IBM eServer pSeries, IBM Systems & Technology Group and Chairman of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Advisory Board. “Through recruiting programs such as Project View, IBM is bringing the world of technology to Hispanic communities which may lead to future careers in science, mathematics and engineering. We are also cultivating Hispanic leadership through our alliance with organizations such as SHPE and through IBM’s La Red, which provides mentoring and internal project opportunities for IBM Latinas,” continued Sanchez. “These SHPE survey results prove that we are definitely on the right path. We’ve worked very hard to get here and we are honored to receive this ranking.”
