Nielsen Funds Scholarships To Promote Diversity In Media.

Nielsen Media Research announced it funded two scholarships to a unique New York University program to help launch careers in the television industry. The two scholarships were awarded by the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO) and will enable each recipient to attend the Nielsen Television Research program at NYU’s School of Professional and Continuing Education this summer. Combining class work and an internship at a television station or network, the NYU course, now in its second year, culminates in a Certificate in TV Audience Measurement and has resulted in full time positions for program graduates.

“It was an honor to collaborate with Nielsen Media Research. Their aim to promote diversity by offering these scholarships to underrepresented groups coincided perfectly with our commitment to providing resources to Latinos and now two Latinas will have a better shot at making it in a competitive industry,” said Ruby Alvarado, Chair of NALFO.

The intensive six week NYU program enables students to learn the basic structure and processes of TV and advertising industries, with emphasis on audience research skills essential to understanding audiences, scheduling programs and supporting sales of commercial advertising. Coursework is supplemented by guest speakers and hands-on experience through internships that enable students to apply learning in a professional environment.

“The NYU program is one way to provide more diverse and competent young professionals to our industry, and both scholarship recipients will benefit significantly from the opportunity to learn valuable skills and gain real-life experience that will help launch their careers,” noted Betsy Williams, Senior Vice President of Human Resources at Nielsen Media Research.
