33rd Annual Fiesta Del Sol In Chicago.
May 23, 2005
The Pilsen Neighbors Community Council presents the 33rd Annual Fiesta del Sol, returning July 28th-31st, 2005. This year’s Fiesta del Sol carries a special theme, “Para Nuestra Communidad y Cultura”, offering a wealth of knowledge and empowerment to our community in Chicago. That theme alone states what the FDS (Fiesta del Sol) is all about.
“Pilsen arduously works yearly to bring justice to our people and our neighborhood. As we face issues that affect us nation wide, every year our community comes together to remember the struggle for a new high school in our community. We pride ourselves in our people and we celebrate our victories. This year’s event marks a milestone accomplishment as we celebrate over three decades of commitment to our people. Each year we commemorate and give thanks for granting us another victory through education, entertainment and empowerment, for our children and families. Neighbors also have the opportunity to participate in our wellness campaign and learn about colleges for young adults. Among many other surprises,” states Anna Gonzales, Fiesta del Sol Chair.
“We’re honored and thrilled to witness history in the making being part of Fiesta del Sol. Our goal is to forge new partnerships with Corporate America and Latino companies for this wonderful event.” comments Mario Cobián, CEO, of the leading Latino Event Marketing company Pochteca EventWorks who once again joins Fiesta del Sol.
Fiesta del Sol is a historic mid-summer extravaganza that has become one of the largest Latino festivals nationwide and is the only one that prides itself in being run by volunteers. Throughout the years Fiesta del Sol has attracted an outstanding 1.3 million attendees, featuring world class entertainment, hot new acts, fair style attractions, games, youth soccer tournaments, health challenge, scholarships, job and college fairs, contests and much more.
The Fiesta del Sol has become a magnificent place to truly learn about Pilsen and its Neighbors. It is run by leaders who come together every year to participate in this cultural event. Offering an enriching experience this event not only brings joy for our families, friends in Chicago and neighboring states, but has served as an informative forum that addresses issues that affect our lives year round. Our concerns range from socially conscious issues such as: health, wellness, college and immigration. In addition, Fiesta del Sol yearly extends an invitation to church congregations, schools and other institutions who are involved with Pilsen Neighbors to participate.
Star-studded performances in that past have included Emilio Navaira, Mi Banda El Mexicano, Barrio Boyz, Carmen Jara, Little Joe y La Familia, Sparxs, Graciela Beltran, Millie Corrtjer, Los Palominos, and GRAMMY ® award winning Julieta Venegas to name only a few.
In 1954 Pilsen Neighbors Community Council (PNCC) was built to serve the community. During the 60’s and 70’s PNCC became an organizing engine for social change. In 1972 Fiesta del Sol began as a celebration to commemorate PNCC’S role in securing the city’s commitment to building Benito Juarez High School. After 31 years Fiesta del Sol continues to reflect PNCC’s desire for social transformation.
