Alex Penelas – Former Miami-Dade Mayor @ Univision TV & Radio Networks.

Univision Communications Inc. announced that former Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas has joined Univision WLTV-23 Miami’s award-winning news department as its exclusive political expert and analyst.

Elected in 1996 as Miami-Dade County’s first Executive Mayor, Penelas served two terms overseeing the 4th largest county government in the country. He will provide insights on a wide variety of political and governmental topics, on a national basis for the Univision Television and Radio networks as well as from the local perspective for Univision WLTV, channel 23 in Miami.

“I am extremely happy and proud to have joined the Univision family, the undisputed leading Spanish-language media company both nationally and locally,” said Penelas. “I am eager to share my over 17 years of experience with the community I have served and to the broader, national Hispanic community, as well. I believe that this will be an especially rewarding association for me personally, and I look forward to forging a continuing relationship with Univision’s loyal viewers and listeners, too.”

With the emergence of Hispanic issues as a major driving force across the political landscape in recent elections, astute analysis has become increasingly important to Hispanic viewers. As mayor of a county of over 2.3 million residents, Penelas’ governmental responsibilities extended to the state and federal level including areas such as emergency response management and immigration. As such, he brings to Univision a rich wealth of experience and political acumen that will provide unique perspectives and insights on a wide range of topics and issues affecting the South Florida community and the nation.

Penelas currently is a Senior Fellow and Professor of Government at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens and enjoys a successful private law practice.
