October 22, 2004
A television public service announcement created by Creative Civilization – An Aguilar/Girard Agency for the American Cancer Society has received an international award for its message on tobacco cessation and prevention.
The MarCom Creative Awards, an international competition that recognizes outstanding achievement by marketing and communications practitioners, received 3,344 entries from throughout the United States and worldwide. Entries are judged by industry professionals who look for advertising that exceeds a high standard of excellence and work that serves as a benchmark for the industry.
“Creative Civilization developed and executed the creative concept titled, ‘If Athletes Smoked’ television PSA in a manner that was both creative and extremely effective,” said Greg Donaldson, national vice president of corporate communications for the American Cancer Society which is nationally headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.
The agency produced the PSA campaign to support the American Cancer Society’s international outreach to Latin American countries. The spots, featuring Argentinean athlete and San Antonio Spur Emanuel “Manu” Ginobili, were broadcast in more than 45 countries throughout Mexico, South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
The :30 second television commercial, which begins with an empty soccer field, pans to a deserted running track, then to a desolate baseball field and an abandoned basketball court, communicates the message that smoking prevents you from living a healthy, active lifestyle and can ultimately kill you. While the sports team can replace a team member, Ginobili reminds viewers about the irreplaceable value of life to that person’s family if they die as a result of smoking.
“Tobacco cessation and prevention is an important health issue that Creative Civilization is passionate about communicating,” said Gisela Girard, president and COO of Creative Civilization. “We take great pride in our work for the American Cancer Society and are honored that our work is being recognized by the MarCom Creative Awards.”
