Univision Radio Personalities Joins Fight On Behalf Leukemia and Lymphoma Society In Miami.
October 8, 2004
The life of Miami on-air personality and television entrepreneur Alberto Sardiñas changed radically when he was only 18 years old, and his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Eight years later, while Gloria Sardiñas is successfully recovering from this illness, Alberto has joined forces with Romance 106.7 FM colleague Ariel Ramírez to participate in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society January 2005 Marathon, and raise money that will help find the cure for blood related cancers.
“After my mother was diagnosed, I realized that we all have someone close to us who has suffered from cancer. Thirty years ago if someone was diagnosed with cancer, they were basically given the death sentence. But research has improved dramatically over the years and today cancer is not always terminal and most survivors go on to lead happy lives for many years,” Sardiñas explains. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team-In-Training is the world’s largest. Since 1988, over 220,000 volunteers have helped raise over $500 million.
Alberto and Ariel will be running the Walt Disney World half marathon (13.1 miles), on January 9th, in Orlando, Florida. In order to accomplish this goal, they have gone from a very sedentary lifestyle to training four to five times a week, several miles per day. “If we can do it almost everyone can. Trust me: We never thought we could be marathon runners,” says Ramirez, who hosts Romance’s mid-day show, Monday thru Friday from 10 am to 3 pm, and now runs with Alberto every morning at 7 am.
