Univision KMEX-TV Wins The Governors Award & 7 Emmys.
August 7, 2004
KMEX-TV took home the Los Angeles Area Governors Award and seven Emmys on Saturday, August 28 at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood.
Univision 34 Los Angeles was recognized for its “34 a Su Lado” (“34 By Your Side”) public-affairs series of segments featured in the station’s local newscast, “Noticias 34.” Each “A Su Lado” topic covers an area of vital interest to L.A.’s Hispanic community, such as healthcare, education, home ownership, voter registration, and immigration law. The foundation of “A Su Lado” is a phone bank manned by community experts throughout the evening to help answer specific questions posed by viewers and to offer professional advice. Additionally, community leaders are interviewed and the most pressing concerns are addressed as part of the newscast. By empowering Hispanics with important information, “A Su Lado” epitomizes Univision 34’s primary mission: to be a catalyst of change within the Latino community.
“KMEX is doing a tremendous job providing professional advice and assistance to the Latino community through ’34 A Su Lado,'” said Dick Askin, Chairman of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “We are very pleased that the academy’s board of governors bestowed this honor on a program that not only educates but is an effective tool to help the community.”
“All of us at Channel 34 are extremely honored to receive the Governors Award,” said Jorge Delgado, President and General Manager of Univision 34 & Telefutura 46. “We are very grateful that the Academy recognizes the station’s community outreach efforts, and we accept this honor on behalf of our viewers.”
The Governors Award is under the jurisdiction of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, a professional organization with over 12,000 members representing all areas of television production and administration.
