Local Latino Talent Wins LATV’s ‘Be A VJ’ Contest.
July 5, 2004
After going through a series of elimination processes, which included votes form the television audience, LATV named twenty-two year old Roberto Moreno the winner of their “Be A VJ” contest yesterday on their live prime-time television program, “LATV Live”. The growing entertainment network put the six-week contest together to give opportunity to young, local bilingual Latinos who otherwise may not have had a chance to be on television. “In addition to being great interactive television, the ‘Be A VJ’ contest now gives Roberto the opportunity to be on during prime-time and start a new career” says Danny Crowe, President of LATV.
It all started one Saturday afternoon in June at the Citadel Outlets in the City of Commerce where more than two-hundred hopefuls waited for their opportunity to be LATV’s next VJ star. Aside from being an eager participant, Moreno was the first one in line. He arrived at five in the morning. At that first open call, the potential stars-in-the-making auditioned and were narrowed down to twenty contestants. While cameras followed them around over a six week period, these finalists competed by going through a “VJ Bootcamp” where they learned VJ do’s and don’ts, by going on location reporting assignments, and by showing their talents live in front of celebrity judges and LATV’s television audience. The celebrity judges offered direct critique while the television audience filled LATV’s email boxes with their votes for the next VJ star. Some of those voters included young women who attended last night’s live taping to support Moreno. After the show, Moreno was already surrounded by approving and adoring fans. “This is something I’ve always dreamed about. I can remember being in kindergarten and wanting to entertain people”, says Moreno who will now receive a coveted spot in one of LATV’s original programs along with a $500 shopping spree at Citadel Outlets and a paid Television Hosting Seminar with hosting guru Marki Costello.
